Biloxi, Miss. (5/19/16) - - Former Gulf Trust Federal Credit Union director, the late William C. Ehlers, was recently inducted into the Mississippi Credit Union Hall of Fame. His son Eddie Ehlers accepted the award.

Created in 1993, the Mississippi Credit Union Hall of Fame is the state’s highest credit union honor, recognizing individuals that have devoted their life to the philosophy and success of credit unions at the local, state or national level.

"The Hall of Fame is our way of highlighting the achievements and showing thanks to those who worked throughout their life to strengthen the credit union movement in Mississippi,” said Charles Elliott, Mississippi Credit Union Association president/CEO.

William C. Ehlers joined Hospital System Credit Union, now Gulf Trust Credit Union, in 1972 a month after the credit union’s charter was granted. He was elected to the supervisory committee in 1975, and the board of directors in 1977, serving as vice president until 1984.

From 1984 – 1987, Mr. Ehlers served as the credit union’s part-time manager, leading the rapid growth of the credit union from $1.1 million to $4.5 million in assets.

Mr. Ehlers held the position of treasurer from 1988 through 2010, and remained on the board of directors until he passed away in 2012. Mr. Ehlers was influential in all decisions made at the credit union, and his legacy helped grow Gulf Trust Credit Union into a full service financial institution with $25 million in assets, serving more than 4,700 members.

“I was fortunate to have Mr. Ehlers’ guidance when I began working at the credit union in 1988. His knowledge, leadership and dedication inspired me to learn and grow, not just professionally, but personally as well. We are excited that Mr. Ehlers’ efforts are being recognized by being inducted into the Mississippi Credit Union Hall of Fame.”
